Chapter 11: English Penitone to American Pennington

Levi Pennington, Jr.

We return now to Levi Pennington, Jr., the fourth child of Levi and Martha, who was born in 1755 in Guilford/Randolph County, North Carolina. The New Garden Monthly Meeting (Quaker), Guildford County, North Carolina show that he was "received by request" in 1756 and "disowned" in 1766. He married Elizabeth Ray on June 3, 1780 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Elizabeth was born in 1755 in Guilford/Randolph County too. Levi was a farmer from 1775 to 1807. He lived in what is present-day Randolph County, North Carolina near Peoples Creek of Broad River. Levi and Elizabeth had an astounding thirteen children. Their oldest son Levi was born in North Carolina, their next, Benjamin was born in 1783 in Randolph, South Carolina and Isaac was born in North Carolina. Elizabeth, their oldest daughter, was born in Tennessee and married James Robbins. Their fifth child was William M. and their sixth was John, born in Tennessee. Rachel was born in South Carolina and married Silas Cooper. Their eighth child was Sarah. Their next five children were all born in South Carolina: Jesse (1799), Joseph (1802), Solomon (1804), Mary (1806), Noah (1807). Their father, Levi Jr., wrote his will on October 30, 1807 and died before December 18, 1808 (his will was probated on that date) in Spartanburg, County, South Carolina. He is buried in the Pennington Family Cemetery in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Elizabeth died in 1829 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.


William M. Pennington, the fifth child of thirteen, was born in 1787 in Guilford/Randolph, North Carolina. William married three times. His first marriage was in 1809 to Elizabeth Sarratt. Elizabeth was born in 1784 to William Sarratt and ? Cole. She was the sister of Mary Margaret "Molly" Sarratt who married Jesse Pennington (William's younger brother) and also Samuel Sarratt who married Nancy Pennington, the daughter of Benjamin Pennington, Sr. (William's older brother). William and Elizabeth Pennington had three children, Samuel (1809, Spartanburg, SC), Martin (1814) and Henry (1815).

William's second marriage was in 1820 to Isabell Sidenham who was born in 1800 in South Carolina. They had eleven children: Walter James Amos (1822), Jasper William "Little Bill" (1823), T. Dot A., Delila, Rachel (1828), Andrew Jackson (1830), John (1833), Latna, (1835), Isaac Newton (1838), Thomas (1841), and Ezekiel (1848).

William's third wife was Francis but they never had any children. William M. died around 1869 in Fayette County, Alabama.


Walter James Amos Pennington was born on May 8, 1822 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He died on October 4, 1903. Walter was a farmer in Alabama. He married Synthia Pennington (Benjamin's daughter, his cousin, b. 1825, S.C.) and they had nine children. Walter died on October 4, 1903 in Vernon, Lamar County, Alabama and is buried in the Furnace Hill Cemetery, Vernon, Lamar County, Alabama.

Jaspar William "Little Bill" Pennington was born in 1817 or 1823 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He married Mary Narcissa Petty before 1846. They had ten children: Isaac Newton (8/23/1843), Aaron (1845/1850), Henry (1846), Thomas (1847), Amanda (1856), Lucinda (1853/1858), Mary E. "Sissy" (1853), Armintie "Rack" (1859), Paralee (1861), Florida (1863).


Henry Pennington was born on June 15, 1846 in Fayette County, Alabama. He married Celia Ann Tackett on July 20, 1868. They had seven children: Samuel Earnest (July 1869), Alonzo "Lonzo" (June 15, 1875), Hayes (1874), Newt (1876), Milton Brown (1877), Melvin L. (June 24, 1880), John Wesley (February 29, 1892). Henry Pennington died on March 23, 1935 and is buried in the Wofford Cemetery in Lamar County, Alabama.


Milton Brown Pennington was born on March 15, 1877 in Alabama. Milton married Mary Bertie Hudson. They had 12 children: Lela Seville (7/13/1903), Lee Roy (1905), Delie (7/14/1906), Millard Fillmore (9/27/1907, who had 6 boys), Bessie Mae (2/13/1909), Henry Etta (2/20/1911), Merle Ada (9/4/1912), Edgar Brown, Cecil R. (11/20/1917), Mary Josephine (12/28/1918), Olen Willie (7/30/1921, who had 2 boys), and Lecil Gray (2/16/1924, who had 6 boys). Milton died in November 14, 1963 and he is buried in Wofford Cemetery, Lamar County, Alabama.


Lee Roy Pennington was the second child of Milton and Bertie and was born on March 4, 1905 in Mississippi. He married Roxie Mae Dykes. We'll look more at her lineage and their children in the next two chapters.

Edgar Brown Pennington, Lee Roy's younger brother, was born on April 11, 1915. He married Rowena Marie Edwards and they had four girls and one boy: Mary Marie, Joyce Ann, James Edgar, Barbara Jean and Edna Sue.
